History of the Airbus A340-300
The A340 and closely related A330 were launched in June 1987, with the A340's first flight occurring on October 25 1991 (an A340-300). The A340 entered service with Lufthansa and Air France in March 1993, following JAA certification the previous December.
The A340 shares the same flightdeck including side stick controllers and EFIS, plus flybywire, basic airframe, systems, fuselage and wing with the A330 (the flightdeck is also common to the A320 series).
History with Philippine Airlines
The Airbus A340-300 joined Philippine Airlines in July, 1995, after Lucio C. Tan became the new Chairman and CEO of the airline. An Ambitious US$4 Billion Dollar modernization and fleet renewal program was launched, the centerpiece of the program was the introduction of 36 state-of-the-art aircraft from Airbus and Boeing between 1996 and 1999. The 36 orders for PAL were for 8 Boeing 747-400, 4 Airbus A340-300, 8 Airbus A330-300 and 12 Airbus A320-200 aircraft. This refleeting program made Philippine Airlines the first airline in the world to operate the full range of New-Generation Airbus Aircraft. Previously Philippine Airlines operated the Airbus A340-200, but due to financial difficulties during the Asian Financial Crisis, they were subsequently sold to LAN Chile airlines, and are still in operation with LAN.
